No-Knock
Green Cardamom, London, 24th April 2008 to 24th May 2008
  Tues - Fri: 11am - 5pm, Sat: 11 am - 2pm

Following Khalil Chishtee’s recent success at Art Dubai, Green Cardamom presents a new body of work by the artist, in his first London solo exhibition.

No-Knock refers to a type of search warrant in the US that allows law enforcement officers to enter a property without knocking and identifying themselves beforehand. The title alludes to what the Chishtee terms ‘these opaque times’, where the boundaries between notions such as public or private, sacred or profane, and truth or fiction are frequently unclear, and faith itself is often questioned.

In No-Knock, Chishtee explores the unexpected ‘moment of truth’, inviting us to trespass into a space where contradictions are unexpectedly encountered. Chishtee’s works are sculpted from plastic bags that are melted into shape with heat guns, and are always made on-site. Using this robust yet slight material, the artist creates ethereal figures that are suspended - seemingly floating - in space, yet formed with a sculptural precision and great attention to detail, innately evocative of human frailty.

In this exhibition, among other things, he references representations of Christ and the Buddha, bringing to mind their incarnation as commodified objects – symbolic of the exploitation of spirituality.
