Seher Shah
Seher Shah received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence,US in 1998, where she also trained as an architect. Living between South Asia and the US, Shah's work combines diverse iconographies. Taking references from both cultures and with a practice informed by her architect's training, Shah's works combine formal structures and planes with intricate drawing. In working with Green Cardamom on the recent Lines of Control project, Shah mined the archives of museums in the UK and India culling images from sources such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the photo archives of the Birmingham Libraries. Architectural pomp and military imagery are fused in built landscapes, where dark silhouettes reminiscent of imperial ‘memorial’ monuments are inserted, dominating the skyline. She draws directly onto the prints – white filigree patterns which intersect or obstruct already densely layered images. Shah’s work is included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, and Brooklyn Museum, New York; The Museum of Contemporary Art, (Hallen fur Neue Kunst), Schauffhausen, Switzerland; and Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Foundation (T-B A21). Seher Shah was born in Karachi and lives and works in New York.
