Abidi’s videos, photographic works and drawings use elements of performance and orchestration to explore the processes of political history, popular imagination and identity formation. Selected recent exhibitions include: Xth Lyon Biennale: The Spectacle of the Everyday, France (2009); The View from Elsewhere, Sherman Art Foundation and Queensland Art Gallery, Sydney (2009); Hanging Fire: Contemporary Art from Pakistan, Asia Society, New York (2009); 7th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2008); Thermocline of Art: New Asian Waves at ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany (2007); GeoPoetics, Centro Jose Guerrero, Granada, Spain (2007); the first Singapore Biennial (2006); Sub-Contingent - The South Asian Sub Continent in Contemporary Art, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy (2006); Contemporary Commonwealth, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia (2006) and the 3rd Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial in Fukuoka, Japan (2005). Her Shan Pipe Band Learns Star Spangled Banner (2004) was picked by Barbara London, Associate Curator at the Media Department of MOMA, NY as among Art Forum’s Top 10 films for 2006.
Bani Abidi was born in Karachi in 1971, and currently lives between New Delhi and Lahore. She received her BFA degree from Lahore’s National College of Arts (NCA) in 1994 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. Her work is in the collections of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan; Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin; and the Marguelies Collection, Miami.
